What We Do
Renewable energy, technology development and commercialisation is the core of what we do.
Darren qualified with a masters degree from UCC, along with extensive experience working across a range of offshore energy technologies
Martin is a business, accounting and finance graduate and qualified ACA and ICAEW with over 9 years professional experience.
Patrick holds a BEng in Electronic Engineering and a First Class Honours Masters Degree in Marine Renewable Energy from UCC
Andrew holds a Masters Degree from Cambridge, a Mechanical Engineer with 10 years industry experience in Engineering and Analysis.
The Hi-Gen 5kW wind turbine is a portable turbine designed to be quickly deployed and retracted using existing lifting equipment in periods of vessel downtime. A simple, robust unit designed for operation in the marine environment, the Hi-Gen will harness energy from the wind and integrate into the vessels electrical system, offsetting fuel costs and reducing emissions in ports.
The Hi-Gen turbine is suitable for installation on any vessel with an articulated crane. A range of turbines will be developed in order to suit the requirements of any vessel size and electrical load.
Having identified a common problem experienced by vessel owners worldwide, DARE technology have developed, from concept stage, a novel and patented wind turbine that will provide a fuel cost and emissions reduction for marine vessels. Developed with the input of vessel owners and operators in various sectors, the Hi-Gen prototype, which has been tested on board the Irish Naval Service vessel LE Aisling, is a marine grade turbine that is capable of prolonged operation in harsh conditions.
Renewable energy technology developed for use on marine vessels during periods of downtime, whether as a result of environmental conditions or vessel operations.

The work completed under this research seeks to provide an analysis of fuel usage, load profiles and vessel movement patterns of commercial vessels in Europe. Having gained a good understanding of this, technology will be proposed that will aim to reduce the fuel usage and hence the associated costs and emissions for these vessels.
As part of the Blue Growth sector in Horizon 2020, DARE Technology have been awarded funding under the SME Instrument to provide a technical, economic and commercial feasibility assessment of the Hi-Gen, a portable wind turbine for ships.
